Morehead sits right on the Pottsville Escarpment, where the plateau breaks and the sandstone cliff lines start. Cliff Lines, Benches, and How Steep Is Too Steep
The escarpment gives Rowan County a very particular profile: a narrow ridge top, a steep upper slope, a sandstone cliff band, then more slope below it. Where that cliff line runs, it is a hard stop, not a grade a machine negotiates. The usable work is above it, below it, or on the benches, and knowing which is most of the job planning here.
North faces hold mountain laurel and rhododendron thick enough to stop a person, let alone a sightline. South of town toward Cave Run Lake and the Daniel Boone National Forest, most parcels are recreational: cabins, camps, and hunting tracts with access roads that get steeper the closer they get to the water.
